The IR35 legislation continues to draw criticism.

Posted on

Earlier in the year, I wrote about the implementation of the highly controversial IR35 legislation which of course was delayed until April 2021 due to the pandemic.

A report by the House of Lords heavily criticizes the government:
“IR35 is riddled with problems, unfairness and unintended consequences and has not worked for 20 years, according to Lord Forsyth, chair of the House of Lords Economic Affairs Finance Bill Sub-Committee.”

The report calls on the government to rethink the plans and argues that there should be three categories of worker: employed, self-employed and “dependent contractor”.

Of course, much damage has already being done with some firms making blanket decisions to the detriment of UK contractors and freelancers.

The government insists that it’s just a deferment, not a cancellation so we will have to see how this continues to pan out!

Are you a contractor already affected by IR35?
